What is Hanami?
Hanami is the centuries-old Japanese tradition of gathering under blooming sakura trees, eating, drinking, listening to music and marvelling at how briefly something beautiful lasts.
In 2007, Norio Tomida san, the man behind Tokyokan, planted the first cherry trees in Roihuvuori park. Since then, the Japanese community and locals have kept adding more, and today around 350 cherry trees bloom across the cherry park and the nearby Japanese-style garden. Helsinki has celebrated Hanami here since 2008. Bring a blanket. Bring friends. Look up.
花見とは、満開の桜の木の下に集い、食べ、飲み、音楽に耳を傾け、美しいものがいかに儚く散りゆくかに思いを馳せる、何百年もの歴史を持つ日本の伝統です。
2007年、東京館を手掛けている冨田憲男氏がロイフヴオリ公園に初めて桜の木を植えました。以来、在フィンランドの日本人コミュニティと地元の人々によって桜の木は増え続け、今では桜公園と近隣の日本風庭園を合わせて約350本の桜が花を咲かせています。ヘルシンキでは、2008年からこの場所でお花見を祝ってきました。ブランケットを持って、友人と桜を楽しんでください。
